| Patient’s Perspective On Safety in Diagnostic Imaging: Significant clinical benefits, enthusiasm for the use of new technologies, and inaccurate media attention have obscured the consideration of the risks involved in diagnostic imaging. Data on the effects of ionizing radiation and recent recommendations for restraint in the use of x-rays—especially in children—are often greeted with surprise from practicing health care professionals. The message about patient safety in diagnostic imaging has been presented across the country to audiences of varying backgrounds and levels of experience. Health care professionals and consumers alike are overwhelmingly grateful to have access to information that helps them become more aware of the benefits and the risks of x-rays and other forms of imaging. Consumers report their intentions to decrease personal requests for scans, keep logs of x-ray history, share the information with their friends and family, and before consenting to x-ray procedures ask questions such as, “Will this imaging test change what we do next?” |
